BURLINGTON — Ruby Edna Dickerson Whitfield, 87, of 2824 Hester Road, Burlington, went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, October 30, 2021 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Whitfield was born in Person County and raised in the Bethel Hill Community in Dr. Merritt’s house.
She graduated from Hurdle Mills High School in 1952 and later received her LPN degree in 1971 and then her RN in 1984 in Nursing. She married the late Kelly Pink Whitfield, Jr., in 1951 in the Flat River Community. She worked at Alamance County Hospital from 1971
- 1995 and also worked with the Founding doctors of the Kernodle Clinic.
Mrs. Whitfield volunteered with the American Red CrossBlood Mobile. She was a member of the VFW Auxillary. Mrs. Whitfield was of the Primitive Baptist faith and attended Peoples Church in Mebane. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Walter Gray and Ombrice Harris Dickerson, her son, David Kelly Whitfield, Sr., five brothers, Roland, Gilbert, Gerald Ray, Sam “Jimmy” and William Dickerson and four sisters, Evelyn Shotwell, Getrude Holt, Betty Wilkins and Dorothy Wrenn.
Mrs. Whitfield is survived by her children, Donald Jeffrey Whitfield, of Rockwell, Connie W. King and husband John, of Concord and Douglas Craig Whitfield and wife Denise, of Burlington; her step-mother, Rosa Dickerson, of Roxboro; her brother, Talmadge Dickerson and wife Cathy, of Hillsborough; her sisters, Christine Kepley, of Chapel Hill, Ruth Burch and Joyce Carver, both of Roxboro; her half brothers, Ted Dickerson and wife Connie, of Omaha, Neb. and Tim Dickerson and wife Jackie, of Roxboro; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; two special nephews, Jim Fox and Ken Dickerson.
Graveside services was held Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, at Wheeler’s Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Hal Dickerson. Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be David Whitfield, Jr., William King, Doug Whitfield, Jr., Brent Carver, Jim Fox, and Ken Dickerson. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Shotwell and Randy Broach.
