Ora Gray McFarland McDowell, age 97, of Roxboro, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2022. She was born on March 30, 1925 in Granville County to the late Annie Elliott McFarland and Lester Bradwell McFarland. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, George Willie McDowell, and siblings Sophia McFarland Bowes and Richard Calvin McFarland.
Survivors include her three daughters Linda McDowell Williams (Sammie), Barbara McDowell Pleasant (Dan), and Janet McDowell Lewis. She is also survived by five grandchildren Brent Thomas Pentecost (Sue Ann), Dan Miller Pleasant, Jr. (Beth), Heather Lewis Wrenn (Matt), Anna Pleasant Grossnickle (Andrew), and Crystal Lewis Boger (Andy); and 10 great grandchildren Jacob and James Pentecost, Dan Miller Pleasant III, James and Elizabeth Grossnickle, Emily, Lindsay, and Lily Wrenn, and Avery and Adylyn Boger.
Ora was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Always referred to as “the sweetest woman,” she had a beautiful smile and an infectious giggle. Family time was always centered around good food, prayers, songs, and laughs. After George passed, she became the matriarch of the family, continuing with the love the two of them freely gave their family. Their hearts and home were always open to family and friends. They will both be greatly missed. As Ora walked into heaven her “crown” was full of jewels.
Visitation will be Saturday, May 7 at Brooks and White Funeral Home, Roxboro, 12:30-1:30 p.m. A private graveside service for the immediate family will be at Person Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Westwood Baptist Church 970 Leasburg Road Roxboro, NC 27573. Ora was a charter member at Westwood, and enjoyed being a choir member, Sunday School teacher, and leader in various women’s mission organizations.
