Norma Frances Starnes Wilkerson “Sugarpie”


Norma Frances Starnes Wilkerson, “Sugarpie”, age 97 was born on Feb. 20, 1925, in Bahama the youngest child of a Methodist Minister, the Rev. John Frazier Starnes and Verna Gillespie Starnes, and departed this life on June 26, 2022 at her home in Person County with family at her side. Norma was descended from multiple Methodist ministers and spent her early years moving from place to place. When she married her husband Thad, she put her roots down firmly in his homeplace of Person County. She was a faithful member of Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher for multiple years, a member of the UMW, and was instrumental in starting a Bible School there where she served as Coordinator for many years.

She received her education from High Point College.

Norma was a faithful member of the Person County Homemakers Association and was honored by the Person of the Year award.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Thaddeus (Thad) Vernon Wilkerson, a daughter Frances Starnes Wilkerson, Brothers, Wayne, Glenn, and Lamar Starnes, and three sisters, Zena Pullman, Bonnie Ray and Lois Evans.

Norma is survived by her children, John (Pat) of Creedmoor, Vernon (Beckie) of Roxboro, Sheila of Durham, and Carol. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, Sonny (Regina), Jill Frisbie(Jeff), Robby (Jamie), Jay (Nicole), Joshua, Jennifer, Heather, and Chris; seven great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to her long term care givers, Sandra Moser, Elizabeth Jacobs, and Pauline Blanks. They also wish to extend thanks for Amedisys Hospice and a special thank you for Nurses, Shenna Lunsford and Crystal Martin.

Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at Lea’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Heather Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
