WINSTON-SALEM — Mr. James “Jim” Jechonias Snead, aged 87, of Bermuda Run, went to be with his Lord on Oct. 30, 2021. Jim passed away peacefully in Winston-Salem, surrounded by family.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021 at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro, with the Reverend Ed Priestaf officiating.
Mr. Snead was born on Sept. 24, 1934 in Person County, to the late James Artie Snead and Roxanna Pulliam Snead. He married Gertrude “Trudy” Myers on June 27, 1959, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Durham. Jim and Trudy were members of Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro.
Mr. Snead retired as General Manager of Tultex, Inc., after a 41-year career with the textiles company. He was father of four children, with the family residing in South Boston and Martinsville, Va. during his career. Jim and Trudy traveled the world sharing many adventures together during his career and retirement, ultimately visiting more than 75 countries and all 50 States.
Jim graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh and then served his country in the Korean War, before beginning his professional career. In addition to his professional career, Jim volunteered his talents and experience to myriad civil and private organizations in South Boston and Halifax County, Va.. He held the following positions: Board President - South Boston YMCA; Board Vice President - Halifax County Country Club; Board Vice President, South Boston Rotary Club; Board Vice President - Halifax County Chamber of Commerce and Board Vice President - Halifax County Hospital. Jim also served as Chairman of the Board of the South Boston Bank and Trust.
Survivors include his daughter, Lynn Snead Lilley and her husband, Ron Lilley and granddaughter Harper Lilley of Kernersville; his daughter, Sandra Snead Gregor and her husband, Ken Gregor and grandson Nate Gregor of Richmond, Va.; his son, Scott Myers Snead and his wife, Shamila Snead and stepchildren Tristen and Ariel, of Morganton; his granddaughter, Heidi Snead and her husband, Myles Merrell and twin great-grandsons, Henry and Holden Merrell of Raleigh, ; his grandson, Erik Snead and great-granddaughter, Jade Snead of Akron, Ohio. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 61 years, Trudy Snead and by their oldest son, James Mark Snead formerly of Axton, Va.
