New cases of COVID-19 in Person County continued their topsy-turvy trend this week.

As of Tuesday, 77 cases have been reported since last week, down from 113 reported last week.

Since the first week of December, new COVID-19 cases have been up, then down the next week.

Two new virus-related deaths have been reported to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 dashboard, taking the county’s total to 93.

The county’s two-week positive test rate rose to 13.4 percent this week.

It was a slow week for vaccinations – as of Tuesday, 27 county residents received their first dose while 33 completed the vaccine series.

In total, 22,619 county residents have been at least partially vaccinated and 21,403 have completed their vaccine series.

CDC updates isolation guidance

In a Monday release, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its isolation guidance from 20 days to five days, if asymptomatic, followed by five days of wearing a mask around others.

“For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than two months after the Johnson & Johnson vaccine) and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days,” Monday’s release says.

If a 5-day quarantine is not feasible, the CDC says it is imperative that an exposed person wear a well-fitting mask at all times when around others for 10 days after exposure.

Individuals who have received their booster shot do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure under the new guidance.

For all those exposed, the CDC says best practice would also include a COVID-19 test at day five after exposure. If symptoms occur, individuals should immediately quarantine until a negative test confirms symptoms are not attributable to COVID-19.
