Walter Ruffin Woody, Jr., 85, of 200 Manchester Dr., died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019. Born in Durham County, Mr. Woody was the son of the late Walter Ruffin Woody, Sr. and Annie Laurie Barnette Woody. Mr. Woody graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism. He has a lifetime of contribution to the state of North Carolina and particularly Roxboro and Person County. Ruffin has done many remarkable things. He was the chairman of the RFD Firemen’s Relief Fund and the RFD Supplemental Retirement Fund and has been a part of these organizations since 1971. He was also a founder of the Roxboro-Person County Rescue Squad. Mr. Woody was the president and CEO of Ruffin Woody and Associates, Inc., in Roxboro. He is also a member of the Person Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, where he was a chairman for three years. Ruffin is a member of the President’s Club at Piedmont Community College, the Roxboro Elks Lodge, and the Roxboro Kiwanis Club, where he is a former club president. Mr. Woody has also donated land to many organizations in the community, including Roxboro Community School, the Person Memorial Hospital Foundation, and the Person County Museum of History. From 1954 to 1956, Ruffin was a part of the U.S. Navy. He was a gunnery officer on a destroyer escort and an assistant officer in charge in the Virginia Navy Recruiting District in Richmond. After returning from the Navy, Ruffin held various jobs including that of a farmer, a sales representative for Central NC, Motorola Communications and Electronics, Inc., and developed the Roxboro subdivisions of Fairfield Park and Windsor Hills. He was also an EMT for about 25 years. Mr. Woody was a general contractor, entrepenuer, antique dealer and former fireman with the Roxboro Fire Department. He was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church.
Mr. Woody is survived by his wife Elizabeth “Lib” Stephenson Woody; seven children, Laura Woody (Steve Long), of Richmond, Virginia; Debra M. Kiser (Marshall), of Roxboro, Annette W. Shytle (Dennis), of Charlotte, Walter Woody III, of Roxboro; Glenna Woody, Durango, Colorado; Susan M. Herendeen (Joe) of High Point; and Dr. Kimmie Yarborough (Larry), of Roxboro; 11 granchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2019, at Roxboro Baptist Church by the Dr. DuPre Sanders and the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will follow in Burchwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be members of the Roxboro Fire Department.
