DURHAM — On March 12, 2021, Susan Bow McWhorter, B. S., M.S., Sigma Delta Epsilon, of Roxboro, passed at age 97. She was born to Jarvis Fonso and Louise Carter Bow in Harrison, Ark. on June 21, 1923.
Sue juggled careers as a researcher; a certified nutrition specialist who served as director and board member of county and state departments of health; and a teacher in multiple disciplines, all while raising her children. Students who took home economics at Roxboro High between 1957 and 1969 will remember her with affection.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L. S. McWhorter (Mac), a son, David G., and a daughter-in-law, Mayra. Left to marvel at her life are her sister Mary, of Tabor City, her sons Val S. (Michael Molina) of Vienna, Va., John A., of Ashland, Va,, and daughter, Helen L. (Virginia ORoak) of Wicomico Church, Va.; grandchildren Dr. David McWhorter (Wendy), Beth Monsour (Lenny), Lukas McWhorter, Alex McWhorter (Henry Winfiele); well-loved great-grandchildren Molly, Macy, Riley, Alex and Cavin; a host of generous neighbors and friends, including the entire Roxboro Garden Club, and close companions Shane and Pippin.
When gathering becomes safe after COVID-19, the family will announce a service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
