Sue Shotwell Baker, 84, of Roxboro, died Friday, Oct. 23 at her home. Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late James Shotwell and Frances Cates Shotwell. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of almost 56 years, Ralph “Whitey” Walker Baker, Jr. and her favorite cousin who was like a brother, J.W. Shotwell.
Sue grew up in Roxboro and graduated from Roxboro High School in 1954. She worked at Bruce’s Dime Store for 15 years and later as a file clerk at Duke for 2 years. Then, in 1969 she stopped working to be a full-time mother. She started attending Ca-Vel Baptist Church at the age of 6 and was baptized in 1948. She taught Sunday School for over 64 years in the primary grades. She was a member of the choir for 62 years and a member of the Elizabeth Mission Group. Sue also served on various church committees over the years. Ca-Vel Baptist was a great love of Sue’s.
Sue started selling Stanley Home Products in 1972. She loved doing parties and promoting Stanley Home Products for 40 years. She also worked part-time at the Village Gate in Uptown Roxboro for eight years. Then, at the age of 58 she began working at Mother Goose Daycare and worked there for 20 years while helping her daughter Renee with her home daycare. This was her favorite. It was her God given talent and passion to work with children. She developed so many memorable special relationships with “her” children and their families. Many children from daycare and church fondly loved “Ms. Sue” as they all called her.
She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and special friend to all who knew her.
Surviving are her two children: Renee Baker Oakley (Chris) and David Baker, all of Roxboro; one granddaughter, Maisy Lynn Baker of Burlington; host of nephews and nieces; cousin-in-law, Jo Shotwell of Roxboro.
Visitation will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ca-Vel Baptist Church and at other times at the home. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Ca-Vel Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Long, the Rev. Kevin Gift and Mr. Bobby Oakley officiating. Burial will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Frank Shotwell, Franklin Edwards, Brad Price, Brock Hurdle, Brett Hurdle and Larry Wilkerson. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Hurdle, Mike Dixon, Paul Stewart, Robert Hatcher, Huel Howerton and Ken Norman.
Flowers are acceptable or memorials may be made to Ca-Vel Baptist Church, 1885 N. Main Street, Roxboro, N.C. 27573
