Person High School’s Key Club values volunteering in the community, and one of the major ways they do this is through their participation in Reading Buddies every month.
Reading Buddies fo- cuses on reaching out to Oak Lane and Earl Bradsher Preschool students in an effort to harvest the love of reading and to help students improve in reading comprehension. It also gives the young students older students to look up to and to model.
“The students do it all themselves, and decided to add Oak Lane to the program this year,” Key Club advisor Hogan Carringer said. “They drive themselves there and back.”
The Reading Buddies program is working in conjunction with the Reading Is Fundamental program at Earl Bradsher, and this year the club decided to incorporate Oak Lane.
Members of the Key Club read books to the younger students, as well as help them with their school work, and the interaction between students has improved reading and reading comprehension in the lower levels.
