Soccer ’Dogs smother Camden in playoff win

The Roxboro Community School soccer team got an early lead and played keep-away the rest of way in its 1-0 victory against Camden County in the first round of the 1A state playoffs.

The Bulldogs (14-4) faced Southside (6-8-2) in the second round Friday, but results were unavailable at press time. The winner of that game will face either second-seed West Carteret or Voyager Academy Tuesday.

RCS controlled the pace of play against Camden County in the first round and got on the board in the first half on a goal by Eryka Vanek. Mackenzie Oliver assisted on the tally.

Camden County was only able to get through the Bulldogs’ stingy defense a couple of times and managed just five shots on goal that were all saved by keeper Carly Grinstead.

For the game, RCS managed 20 shots with 12 on goal.
