Shooting victim dies, more details emerge from Thursday courthouse shooting


The shooting victim has died and more details on Thursday's shooting inside the Person County Courthouse have been disclosed by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

In a Friday morning release, the SBI said the victim, 35-year old Christopher Thomas Vaughan succumbed to his injuries at Duke University Hospital.

The SBI release confirms that the agency has taken over the investigation at the request of the Person County Sheriff’s Office, the Roxboro Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office.

Vaughan was on trial Thursday in district court for misdemeanor false imprisonment.

According to the Person County Sheriff’s Office and Roxboro Police Department Vaughan attempted to attack people inside the courtroom, including the bailiff, shortly before noon Thursday.

The SBI says Vaughan attemted to take a bailiff’s weapon before  an officer from the Roxboro Police Department shot him.

Both officers received injuries and were treated and released from local medical facilities. 

The Roxboro officer has a broken hand and the bailiff has a cut to his head and scratches on his neck. 

The release of the officer’s name will be at the discretion of the District Attorney’s Office and will not be released at this time per the police department’s policy.

As employees of District Attorney Michael Waters' office were in the courtroom at the time of the shooting, Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman's office will be handling the incident alongside the SBI, Waters' office announced Thursday.
