The Person High School volleyball and football teams will see their first live action of the new season Saturday when they each participate in scrimmages.

The Rocket volleyball will play in the Triangle Prep Challenge Saturday morning at Triangle Volleyball Club in Mooresville. Person will play three 35-minute scrimmages in the 21 team event beginning at 8:40 a.m.

The Rockets will matchup with East Surry first, followed by Knightdale and they will finish off play against Franklinton.

East Surry is fresh off a 25-5 season in which it won the Northwest Conference championship and reached the 1A West regional finals before falling to Polk County in four sets. The Cardinals are one of the odds on favorites to represent the west in the 1A state finals this season after bringing back most of their key players from last season, including six-rotation standout Allie Bruner. Bruner led all of 1A with 410 kills last season. The Cardinals return their top six hitters from 2018 and their setter.

Franklinton will be looking to build off a 2018 season in which it finished 19-5 and won the 3A Big East title. The Rams advanced to the third round of the 3A state playoffs.

Knightdale is coming off a 12-9 season and reached the 4A state playoffs. The Knights fell to Millbrook in the opening round.

Other teams participating in the event include: Apex, Cardinal Gibbons, Colonial Baptist Church Homeschool, 3A state finalist D.H. Conley, Fuquay-Varina, Green Level, Havelock, Hillside, Hoggard, J.H. Rose, NCISAA 4A state champion North Raleigh Christian Academy, 4A state finalist Panther Creek, Rocky Mount, Vance Charter, Wake Christian, Wake Forest, Wheatmore.

The Person football team will face a familiar foe in Orange in its preseason scrimmage Saturday. Game time is set for 10 a.m. in Hillsborough.

The teams have been on each others’ schedules many times in recent years, but will not play this regular season. The Panthers will be looking to rebound from a 3-8 season, while new Rocket head coach Joey Carroll will get his first chance to see his team play in a full-contact scrimmage. Person is coming off a 3-8 2018 season.
