Cynthia Petty was sworn in as Roxboro’s newest City Council member at the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night.
Petty took the oath of office, then led the pledge of allegiance as her first action as a council member.
She did not make any motions or second any motions during the meeting, not an uncommon happening for new council members according to Mayor Merilyn Newell.
“It is our tradition because new council members typically will not make a motion in their first meeting because you’re learning and listening – we do offer you the opportunity to make the motion to adjourn,” Newell said.
Petty obliged and the motion passed.
Earlier in the meeting, Newell outlined the application process for filling Sandy Stigall’s unexpired term.
The process will be the same as the one used to fill Blackwell’s seat – consistent with similar vacancies in 2002 and 2010.
A letter of interest and either a resume or city application form must be returned to City Clerk Trevie Adams by Sept. 30th at 5 p.m.
After that date, the council will review the applicants’ submitted materials and conduct interviews at a special called meeting October 2 at 7 p.m.
