PCC begins new Agribusiness program


Under the direction of instructor/ coordinator Kin Watlington, Piedmont Community College (PCC) will offer an Associate in Applied Science degree program in Agribusiness Technology.

Three initial courses will be offered beginning October 16. The program will be based on the Caswell County Campus, and serve both Caswell County and Person County communities.

PCC’s new Agribusiness Technology program will prepare students for employment in a variety of agribusiness jobs such as farm operations, wholesale and retail produce management, store management, and environmental and agricultural education.

Students will learn the fundamentals of agriculture, with emphasis placed on entrepreneurial and field training, as well as the basics of our economic system and government policies and programs relating to agriculture.

With the assistance of local farmers, students will have the opportunity to apply classroom lessons in a real-world setting, gaining realistic hands-on experience.

Agribusiness Technology Classes Offered this Fall Beginning October 16:

Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture (AGR 139)

Providing students with a clear perspective on the principles, history, and practices of sustainable agriculture, this course will focus on our local and global communities. Students will be introduced to the economic, environmental, and social impacts of agriculture. Upon completion, students will be able to identify the principles of sustainable agriculture as they relate to basic production practices.

Agricultural Chemicals (AGR 140)

This course covers all aspects of agricultural chemical.

Topics include safety, environmental effects, federal and state laws, pesticide classification, sprayer calibration, and licensing. Upon completion, students should be able to calibrate a sprayer, give proper pesticide recommendations (using integrated pests management), and demonstrate safe handling of pesticides.

Animal Science (ANS 110)

The Animal Science course introduces students to the livestock industry. Topics include nutrition, reproduction, production practices, diseases, meat processing, sustainable livestock production, and marketing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of livestock production practices and the economic impact of livestock locally, regionally, state-wide, and internationally.
