Older drivers should take extra precautions

The State Highway Patrol wants to remind older drivers of a few safety tips.

Being an older driver involves many safety aspects than those of younger drivers. Older drivers can ensure their safety as well as other road users by:

  • Recognizing potential risk factors – changes in health, involved in a crash, and ones nearly missed.
  • Accepting safety over independence – once a driver is no longer safe to drive.
  • Formulate a driving plan with family and friends.
  • Identify alternative methods of travel.
  • Injuries are more severe even in a low-speed crash.

Last year, in North Carolina 272 drivers were 65 years old and older who died in a crash.
