Mrs. Ola Pearl Whitt, age 97, of 9675 Dirgie Mine Road, Roxboro, departed this life Thursday, September 19, 2019 in her residence. She was a native of Person County and a member of Vernon Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Whitt; two sisters: Frankie Hinchen and Effie Moten; three brothers: Cleotis Lawson, Johnnie Lawson and Donnie Lawson.; and one granddaughter, Nena Rahman.
She is survived by three children: Mattie Whitt of the home, Larry Whitt (Hafeezah) of Raleigh and Jaynette Howard (Rev. Dr. Dorwin) of Oxford; five sisters: Nadine Cunningham (Ossie, Jr.) of Roxboro, Mazel Winston of Washington, DC, Jaynette Jordan (Rubin) of Brooklyn, NY, Lawanda Laventure and Martha Ann Eubanks, both of Durham; two sisters-in-law: Mary Whitt and Barbara Lawson, both of Roxboro; five grandchildren: LaToya Broadie (Brian) of Harrisburg, Garcia Whitt (Eboni) of Houston, TX, Malorie Howard of Oxford, D.L. Howard (GeorQuesha) of Chapel Hill and Nylah Whitt of Raleigh; four great-grandchildren: Daisha Whitt of Raleigh, Kendall and Braylon Broadie, both of Harrisburg and Koby Whitt, also of Houston; two adopted sisters, Barbara Bailey and Mae Jo Hollinswoth; and a host of other additional relatives and friends.
The funeral service was Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 11:00 a.m. at Vernon Hill Baptist Church, 80 Vernon Hill Church Road, Oxford, where Rev. Ollie Ellison is the Pastor, with the Rev. Dr. Dorwin L. Howard, Sr., Pastor of First Cosmopolitan Church in Raleigh, who provided the eulogy and the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Hammond, Pastor Emeritus of Union Baptist Church in Durham, who officiated. Burial with a “Healing Tree” ceremony followed in the church cemetery. Visitation was Monday at the funeral home from 1:00pm to 6:00pm with the family present during the last hour from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
At other times, the family received friends at the home.
Her body lay in repose in the church for one hour prior to the service.
Cunningham and Nelson Funeral Directors were in charge of the service of comfort for Mrs. Ola Pearl Whitt.
