New bus route set to get rolling in March

Personians may soon be able to access more local services and amenities with the launch of the new Roxboro Shuttle route.

Person Area Transportation System (PATS) is expanding its route to include nine new stops.

It is scheduled to take effect Monday, March 4.

The deviated fixed shuttle route will include a total of 23 stops. Right now, there are only 14 stops.

The route will operate from 7 a.m until 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, running on a hour and a half loop.

From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the shuttle will not run to give drivers a break.

“We added Person County Senior Center, Earl Bradsher Preschool at their request, Person Family Medical Center and the King Bee on North Main Street, that was a request of Person County Social Services Department because there is a lot of people in Ca-Vel Village who don’t have a lot of transportation. The rest are apartments complexes we added. It was a total of five new apartment complexes,” said Glen LaBar, transportation director for PATS.

According to LaBar, the majority of the new added routes are apartment complexes because a lot of people living at those complexes don’t have transportation, said LaBar.

“I talk to some of the drivers and quite a few of them said they had been asked why they didn’t go to the apartment complexes and certain places. So, we basically looked at different places or something that would be a benefit to the community,” said LaBar.

Earlier this year, PATS drew requests from the community to add new routes for people who depend on this source of transportation to get to work, medical appointments and basic necessities such as shopping.

The plan to add the new routes had been in discussion since early December.

LaBar gave PATS’ advisory board nearly two weeks to decide which new routes to add.

The project was finalized mid-January and the new route map and schedules were released shortly thereafter..

“It is going to open doors for transportation. We now have the opportunity to provide means for the community at a cheap cost. It is $1 for every stop,” said LaBar.

All stops at the main apartment complexes will be at the Main Office.

Riders are asked to arrive at least five minutes prior to departure time and stand on the side of the road in the direction of travel.

The Roxboro Shuttle was formerly known as the Uptown Shuttle. PATS recently changed the name to fit its expanding route.

“It goes all around the City of Roxboro and because it goes much further than Uptown, we thought we needed to change the name,” said LaBar.

The Roxboro Shuttle has magnetic name plates, so people can identify it.

To use PATS’ services, people are asked to either call 336-597-1771 for more information or visit the office at 341 S. Madison Blvd.
