On Friday, Oct. 11, 2019 Michael “Diamond” Thompson passed away peacefully holding the hand of his beloved wife, Sandy, surrounded by his favorite music and the love of his friends and family.
Michael was born Nov. 1, 1951, to Zane and Louise “Mame” Thompson. A self-taught musician from the age of 11, he pioneered the Guitar Performance Degree at UNC Chapel Hill. He also received a Master’s in Music Education/Music Therapy at ECU. Michael’s passion as a musician was contagious and, like a pied piper, inspired others to value and develop their own talents.
His musical career led him throughout the southeast, including as a featured performer on the Mississippi Queen Riverboat, and a decade as a visiting artist with the NC Arts Council. In 1993 Michael’s life changed from a rambling man to marrying the love of his life and setting roots down in Caswell County. Here he shared his talent with the community though performance and education.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jeff Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, brother Bobby Thompson (Diane) and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation with the family will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17 at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Duke Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Music Makers Relief Foundation.
