Joe John Shumate

Joe John Shumate, 93, of Roxboro, died Friday, Sept. 4, 2020 at his home. Born in Wyoming County, West Va., he was the son of the late Amos Johnson Shumate and Helen Pendry Shumate. Mr. Shumate was preceded in by his two brothers: Keith and Chris Shumate.

Mr. Shumate served in the United States Army during World War II. Once he left the Army, he started his career with the IRS where he excelled and advanced over the years. After retiring, he built homes for many years and served on the Home Builders Association. Mr. Shumate was a member of the Lion’s Club and served as a past governor.

Surviving are his wife, Lubys Mercado Rodrigues Shumate; one son, John David Shumate of Roxboro; three brothers: Bill Shumate, David Earl Shumate and Amos Johnson “AJ” Shumate; three sisters: Martha S. Clay, Annette S. Walk and Yvonne S. Clay.

Memorial service will be held at a later date.
