James Everette “Maverick” Clayton

James Everette “Maverick” Clayton of Scottsburg, Va. passed away January 30, 2019. He was born in Person County on January 7, 1931 and was 88 years of age. He was the son of the late James Dewey Clayton and the late Ida Bertha Turner Clayton. He was married for 59 years to Mary Alice Lloyd Clayton who survives.

He was a member of Winns Creek Baptist Church, and a United States Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Patricia Clayton Smith and husband David of Scottsburg, Va. and Christie Clayton Crews and husband Charles of Nathalie, Va.; four grandchildren, Jordan Wade Matlock and husband Chris, Jeremy King, Taylor Crews and Katie Crews; two great grandchildren, Liam Matlock and Dawson King; and two brothers, Cecil Clayton and wife Peggy and Leon Clayton and Mary all of Roxboro.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Michael Clayton; three siblings, Dorothy Merle Clayton Fuquay, Hazeline Lewis and Ervin “Bay” Clayton.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. at Winns Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Chambers and Rev. Jim Copco officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The family received friends Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home and other times at his home, 2087 Clays Mill School Road, Scottsburg, Va.
