George Edwin Harris, 92, of Roxboro, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2020 at his home. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late George Kitchen Harris and Virginia Montague Harris. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, R. Gary Harris; his brother, Dolian Harris and his sister-in-law, Jane. Mr. Harris served in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II.
Mr. Harris was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church where he served on various committees over the years. He was a faithful member who loved his church and church family. He was a tobacco farmer for many years and loved working the land. Mr. Harris was the owner and operator of the George Harris Gas Station.
Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Katherine Adams Harris of Roxboro; his daughter, Georgia Harris Wilkins (Sam) of St. Jacob, Ill; daughter-in-law, Patsy Harris of South Boston, Va.; four grandchildren: Robin Wilkins May, Dan Wilkins (Jessica), Brandy Harris Oakley and Michael Harris (Jamey); five great-grandchildren: Eric Oakley (Jerica), Devin Wilkins, Dax Wilkins, Emma Dalton and Charleston Harris; two great-great grandchildren.
Visitation was be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, 2020 at Providence Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Funeral service was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020 at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis McDonald and the Rev. Hal Dickerson officiating. Burial followed in the Providence Cemetery.
