The Person High School softball team rode a nearly flawless pitching performance and got a timely late hit to upset 12th-seed West Brunswick 1-0 Tuesday in the first round of the 3A state playoffs.
It was the program’s first playoff victory since a 2-0 victory against Wake Forest Heritage in 2012, the final season of program patriarch Mike Shotwell.
The Rockets faced Mid-Piedmont Conference champion Southern Alamance (22-5) Friday in the second round of the playoffs, but results of the game were unavailable at press time. The winner will face either fourth-seed Topsail (19-3) or Western Alamance (11-8) next Tuesday in third round.
Person used some dramatics to stun West Brunswick in the playoff opener.
The teams battled to a scoreless time after six innings, but Person finally broke through in the seventh.
Hannah Duke delivered the game’s only run with a two-out double that plated pinch-runner Carmen Beaver from third. Duke had two of the Rockets four hits in the game.
Gabby Jones and Taylor Sullivan also singled in the win.
Freshman Lillie Davis was outstanding inside the circle for the Rockets, holding the Trojans to just one hit and one walk, while striking out nine.
