A shooting during a trial at the Person County Courthouse has left one person in critical condition, according to a joint release this afternoon from the Person County Sheriff's Office and Roxboro Police Department.
Multiple sources have identified the person shot in the courthouse as Christopher Thomas Vaughan.
Vaughan was scheduled to be in court Thursday for a charge of misdemeanor false imprisonment.
According to the release, the victim attempted to attack people inside the courtroom, including the bailiff, shortly before noon Thursday.
Vaughan has been transported to an unnamed local hospital in critical condition.
The release does not say who was shot, how many shots were fired, or how many individuals were involved.
Thursday was a regularly-scheduled district court date at the Person County Courthouse.
As is regular policy, the State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to conduct the investigation.
“There is not a community threat," Sheriff Dewey Jones said. "The courthouse will remain close throughout the remainder of the day.”
Roxboro Police Chief David Hess said both agencies are working together.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone involved," said Police Chief David Hess. "We would ask the community to please be patient during this process.”
