Bulldogs shut out Southside, move to the third round


The Roxboro Community School soccer team took control early and never let up in an 8-0 rout of Southside in the second-round of the 1A state playoffs Friday in Chocowinity.

The 10th-seeded Bulldogs (15-4) will travel to second-seed East Carteret Wednesday for the 1A East regional quarterfinals. The Mariners (18-4) were the champions of the Coastal 8 Conference and earned their third-round date with the Bulldogs by defeating Voyager Academy 4-0 Friday.

The Bulldogs pulled away from Southside early, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes.

They padded their lead to 4-0 by the end of the first half and added four more in the final 40 minutes.

Mackenzie Oliver led the way with four goals for RCS, while Abby Lewis, Olivia Townsend, Megan Whitlow and Eryka Vanek each scored.

Lewis, Georgia Carver and Emily Taylor assisted on goals.

Carly Grinstead earned the shutout victory after making three saves. The Bulldogs have not allowed a goal in their last six games.
