The Roxboro Community School soccer team roared back from an early hole to knock off Person, 4-3 in its season opener Tuesday at home.
The Rockets jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half on two goals by junior Abby Mayer, just three minutes apart in the final minutes of the opening frame.
RCS controlled the pace of play for much of the second half and got on the board when senior Eryka Vanek found the back of the net 12 minutes into the second half.
Person answered right back six minutes later on a goal from Emma Duncan, but Vanek sliced the Rockets’ lead back to one less than a minute later.
RCS senior Mackenzie Oliver tied the game 3-3 with 13:25 to play on an assist from Abby Lewis and took the lead for good three minutes later when Lewis scored off an assist from Vanek.
The Bulldogs wrapped up their week with a 2-1 loss at Orange. Their lone goal came in the second half when Lewis put the ball into the net after a through ball by Oliver slipped by the keeper.
RCS will be back in action Wednesday when it hosts Oxford Prep. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
The Person soccer team fell to South Granville, 9-3 Thursday at home, but it was still an occasion to celebrate.
Mayer scored her 50th career goal in the second half of the game on a shot that slipped past the keeper after out running Viking defenders. Mayer, just three games into her junior season, is already the school’s career leader in goals.
