Betty Winstead Bowes, 84, of 124 Yarborough Street in Roxboro, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2020 at Roxboro Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
She was the daughter of the late Harvey T. and Mary Watts Winstead and was preceded in death by four siblings, Therit Winstead, Archie Winstead, Laura Winstead Webster, and Paul Winstead. Surviving siblings include Sam
Winstead, Frances Winstead Rudder, and Jim Winstead.
She was married to the late Rev. Wayne Oakley and subsequently to the late Golden Sterling Bowes.
She had six step-children in her second marriage: three deceased, including Melvin T. Bowes, Bobby Bowes, and Gladys B. Whitt, and three surviving, including Golden Sterling Bowes, Jr., Ruby B. Whitt, and Wilma B. Whitt. She had 16 nieces and nephews, 13 step-grandchildren, and 33 step-great-grandchildren.
Ms. Bowes graduated from Roxboro High School in 1955 and worked for 40 years as a nurse’s aide at Person Memorial Hospital, where she was appreciated and
loved by her colleagues and friends. She was a faithful member of Ephesus Baptist Church in Semora.
A graveside service conducted by Rev. David Bunch will be held at the Winstead family cemetery at Elmwood, 928 Ralph Winstead Road, Leasburg, on Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 am. Friends and family may also pay their
respects at Brooks & White Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 10. Memorial donations may be made to the Ephesus Baptist Church, c/o Virginia Shull, Treasurer, 260 Hassel Clayton Road, Roxboro, N.C. 27574.
