Allensville VFD does more than fight fires

To the editor:

On Saturday, April 27, I had the privilege of working with the fine men and women of the Allensville Volunteer Fire Department on the Spring Litter Sweep sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. We picked up nearly 25 bags of litter from the otherwise scenic roadways of Allensville.

Roadside litter in our county is a personal pet peeve of mine. When I saw that the DOT was sponsoring an April cleanup drive, I wanted to take action and do it in my local township of Allensville. I approached the Allensville VFD for their help and guidance. Under the leadership of Fire Chief Gary Deitz, they enthusiastically volunteered to help with the cleanup. After all that these folks do for Allensville, to jump into this added effort is a true testament to their volunteer spirit and dedication to our community. I want to express my sincere appreciation to all those who supported our clean-up on Saturday.

In closing I make two requests to our community: (1) Don’t litter – it’s ugly and it degrades our quality of life in Person County; and (2) support our VFD teams. The Allensville VFD meets every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Allensville fire station on Denny Store Road. Join them to find out more about how you can help.
