191 new COVID-19 cases reported

Since last Thursday, 191 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Person County, according to data from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 Dashboard.

The new spread is slightly less than the 201 reported the previous week.

No deaths reported this week keeps the county’s total at 78.

The new cases take the county’s total to 4,700.

The county’s two-week positive test rate fell to 12.3 percent from 14.1 percent last week.

In the past week, 163 county residents were at least partially vaccinated, taking the county’s total to 20,427, or 52 percent.

There were also 283 county residents were completed the vaccine series, taking the total number of fully vaccinated residents to 18,998 or 48 percent.

As of Tuesday, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention classifies Person County, like the rest of the state, as high community spread.

In a Tuesday press briefing, NCDHHS Secretary Dr. Mandy Cohen outlined the state’s COVID-19 metrics.

Cohen said the number of people going to emergency departments with COVID-like symptoms, the state’ earliest detection mechanism, rose dramatically in July and August, but has been decreasing.

The state trajectory of new cases peaked in January and a second peak in August and September occurred quicker than the first.

Since the end of July, Cohen said the state has averaged around 6,000 new cases each day, but have been level.

Cohen said the case rates are highest among children 17 years old or younger, who made up approximately one-third of the state’s cases for the week ending Sept. 18, a trend Cohen said the state has seen for the last three weeks.

The state’s percentage of positive tests is hovering around 10 percent, well above the goal of five percent.

Day-to-day hospitalizations has been leveling, Cohen said, but for close to a month, the state has been hovering around 900 people needing ICU beds and one-third of all new hospital admissions in the past week have been people under the age of 49.

County school metrics

Within Person County Schools, 74 students and one staff COVID-19 case were reported as new in the district’s weekly report last Friday.

In total, PCS is reporting 162 students and six staff cases since the return to school.

The district is reporting 515 students and staff across the system who are currently in isolation due to a positive test, exposure to a person who has tested positive, exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms or who have been advised to isolate, up from 387 reported the previous week.
